Under The Dome, the TV adaptation of a thriller by the bestselling author Stephen King, has been cancelled after three seasons.

When it launched in June 2013, it drew an audience of 13 million, making it the most-watched opening episode of any summer drama since 1992. Its final episode will air on September 10.

The horror mystery show is based on King's 2009 novel of the same name in which a vast transparent dome suddenly descends on a town, cutting its residents off from the rest of the world.

Its cast included Dean Norris, who played Walter White's brother-in-law Hank Schrader in Breaking Bad, as the town's councilman, and longtime CSI actress Marg Helgenberger, who were among those to pay tribute to the show.

Under The Dome has been cancelled. Thank the Lord! That show makes my brain hurt. It should have ended after the first season.

I'm kind of glad. The show used to be really good but is quickly going downhill. I'd rather have it go out now. #UnderTheDome

But there was no doubt that the show had left an impression.
